And the Scholarship Winner for 2016 is…. Ik-Jong Choi! Congratulations!

Posted on May 20, 2016 by Glenview Art League

Our new Scholarship Winner is the incredible Ik-Jong Choi from Glenbrook North High School! Lauded by those that have worked with Ik-Jong through the years commend him for being a high-achieving student, critical thinker and for having exceptional talents as an artist! All this, while being color-blind!  Ik-Jong will be studying architecture at Carnegie-Mellon in the Fall.

Ik-Jong explained to a teacher about his personal journey through art: “It taught me to understand myself better, boosting up my self-esteem. In the end, I realized producing art is not about chasing others afterward to let them see what they want, but it’s about doing what you see and feel at that moment and really be in control of your own art.”

Enjoy his fabulous work. And, best wishes Ik-Jong!

Glenview Art League Mourns Passing of Long-Standing Member and Former President, Robert T. Sherman, Jr. 8/19/1937-6/9/2015

Posted on Jul 6, 2015 by Glenview Art League

The Glenview Art League has lost one of its most dedicated members with the passing of Bob Sherman on June 9th, 2015. Bob was one of the earliest members of the League and since then has held every officer position on the Board of Directors, encouraged other artists, and shared not only his skills as an artist but his many business skills as well.

Bob’s interest in commercial art started at New Trier High School where he enjoyed lettering and designing ads for the school paper. He later worked as a commercial artist for “Penny Saver”, and advertising paper in the south suburbs and has consulted on web design, business analysis, quality assurance analysis, and software support. Although he tried other types of media, he preferred oil paint and strove for color intensity and contrast. To keep his colors pure, he used eight small jars of turpentine, each with its own set of brushes.

He joined the Glenview Art League during its early years in the mid-1950’s and was instrumental in organizing the first Outdoor Summer Art Fair in 1955, which was a handful of artists who set up card tables to sell their work.  The Summer Art Fair is now a two day event and draws more than 80 artists from across the country to exhibit their work.

Bob also organized the very first Youth Art Fair (52 years ago), now held annually for students of all ages with prizes awarded in every grade.  As the YAF grew, he built over 20 wooden easels to help display the work and brought those easels to and from storage every year, setting them up and breaking them down!  The 2015 YAF featured the work of 235 students.
