The 2026 Robert Sherman Fine Art Scholarship is awarded to Katherin Choi of Glenbrook North. Katherin presented her work to the Glenview Art League Board of Directors on May 18, with Elizabeth Chong, her AP Art and Design Teacher at GBN. Board members were impressed with the expression and technical skill shown in her artwork.
In her application Katherin shares the experience of leaving South Korea to live in the United States, “My art was a profound season that helped me to find the courage to openly express my own feelings, desires, and uncertainties while drawing from past experiences. An impactful realization during this time was how I miss Korea. That feeling of longing for something became central to my work and is something that many can understand… It was my unique language that expressed what I could not say verbally.”
In an enthusiastic letter of recommendation, Elizabeth Chong shares, “Her work gives viewers an intimate look at her journey navigating the personal dichotomy between her life as a student and friend in South Korea versus in the US. Katherin uses symbolism and expression to allow these stories to come to life.”
Another GBN teacher, Jennifer Laudadio, agrees. “Her passion for art is boundless… She is intelligent, kind, motivated and active.”
The Robert Sherman Fine Art Scholarship was founded to honor Glenview Art League founding member and long-time president, Bob Sherman (1937-2015). Applications are open to graduating seniors either living in Glenview or attending a District 225 high school. The scholarship supports the League’s mission to promote the study and development of art in the community. This year the amount of the scholarship was raised to $5,000.
Katherin plans to study art at the University of Michigan. She is invited to exhibit her artwork at the Glenview Art League Summer Art Fair, July 18-19, 2026 from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. at Attea Middle School. More information can be found on the website at www.glenviewartleague.org.
