The Glenview Art League proudly awards the 2023 Robert Sherman Fine Art Scholarship to Zander Brandt, a graduating senior at Glenbrook South High School. Zander submitted an impressive portfolio of drawings, collage and digital artwork, as well as an essay, letters of recommendation, and his acceptance letter from MICA (the Maryland Institute College of Art), in Baltimore, Maryland.
Zander shares, “My art expresses what I am unable to say through words, it speaks for me in a different language that everyone on planet earth can understand… Because of the exploration of the self, identity and humanity I push with my art, that inner passion wanted to go beyond a hobby, something I could do for a lifetime.”
This year Zander is part of the advanced placement art class and the National Art Honor Society. GBS Fine Arts teacher Stephanie Fuja writes, “Zander is an outstanding student with a passionate soul and a natural gift for drawing. He is creative, intelligent, thoughtful, mature and incredibly talented.” Mathematics teacher Lauren Sutherland describes Zander as “a passionate problem-solver… an active participant and a model student for others to follow. He proves to be steadfast in his ability to persevere… Zander is someone who enhances the community of learners in the classroom.”
The scholarship committee and members of the GAL Board are impressed by the high quality of Zander’s work, and support his intention to pursue art in the future. His efforts and the integrity he expresses in his artwork have shown him to be a worthy recipient. The Robert Sherman Fine Art Scholarship was established to foster the study of art and advance the development of artists in keeping with the mission of the Glenview Art League. It is for a high school senior planning to pursue a college degree in a visual art. It is a one-time scholarship of $1,000, given directly to the student to use at their discretion towards the cost of college. Zander is invited to show his work at the 2023 Summer Art Fair on July 22-23.
